What happens with aging?
As we age, collagen and elastin continue their inevitable breakdowns beneath the surface of your skin. This causes your skin to become less supple, smooth and elastic. Collagen creates the scaffolding beneath the skin, holding it up, while elastin maintains skin elasticity. As they both break down, you’ll begin to see facial hollows and sagging skin.
Beginning at age 20, your skin produces about 1 percent less collagen each year. By the time the average woman has reached 50 she has lost half of the collagen in her skin.
There are two types of skin aging that occur at the same time:
Intrinsic skin aging is caused primarily by internal factors within the body, such as genetics and the normal aging processes. Extrinsic skin aging, or photo-aging, is caused by environmental factors such as sunlight and lifestyle habits such as smoking.
Collagen and aging
Collagen gives structural support to the skin. It is the most abundant form of protein in the extracellular matrix, and its decrease is a major factor in wrinkle formation. Some of the important roles of collagen in terms of skin aging are:
- Gives strength to the dermis.
- Gives elasticity to the dermis.
- Increases cell strength.
- Provides stability
Many women are surprised to find out that the skin’s natural collagen and elastin deposits begin to deplete as early as the mid-twenties, but this time is as crucial as any other time for the prevention of wrinkles.
The natural collagen we are born with diminishes as we age at a rate of about 1% per year.
IT’S NEVER TOO EARLY TO START
